The Three Amigos December 31, 2004

In a neverending personal tradition, I watch “The Three Amigos” at least once every year, usually within a week of New Year’s day. I know the script quite well, and there are few surprises. But every couple of years, there is a joke or innuendo in there that I had missed before and suddenly it all makes sense to me. This humor that is revealed to me in layers is the result of, dare I say, consistant study and attention to minute details. This movie is truly one where you find more and more to enjoy the more effort you put into it. When I watch it and something clicks where before I hadn’t noticed anything before, it makes me appreciate the movie that much more. I suppose you could say that I am an adept at discerning the slapstick comedy of this movie.

Regifting December 30, 2004

Regifting is the action of taking a gift you have received and giving that gift to another person. This is considered by many to be a taboo practice, but some are beginning to see regifting as socially acceptable, depending on circumstances. Poor circumstances can include giving the gift to the one who gave it to you in the first place, giving a gift based on your dislike of the item unless you are certain the new recipient would be pleased with it, regifting a personal (or worse, personalized) item or regiving a gift to someone out of spite toward the original benefactor.
What about proper uses of regifting, though? When is it not only acceptable, but even ideal to regift? What are the parameters one should recognize when offering a gift you yourself have received? For this post, I will offer two examples of regifting.

Christmas Flurries December 29, 2004

We did have snow for Christmas this year. Snow for Christmas is something that I both love and hate. Christmas just doesn’t seem right without a blanket of snow outside, but shoveling it can be a real pain… quite literally! The flurries I have in mind, though, have more to do with the constant activity of my family for the week prior to Christmas through the week following Christmas. Like the snow, it seems we are going in every direction at once during this time.

“Prove Me Wrong” Week 16 December 28, 2004

OK, I have no excuses. 15 weeks of football analysis under my belt and I can’t pick even a majority of the winners in week 16. It is a sad day indeed. Speaking of sad, I am saddened to hear that Reggie White is no longer with us on the earth, but there is joy in sadness, for though he is not with us, he is with the Lord and has placed his crown at the feet of God. Reggie White made a name for himself by tackling leaders when they least expected it. I’m sure glad that Gideon is unable to feel any pain, for he is a leader from the OT just begging for a Reggie White blindside smash!
I’m likely wrong about what the Minister of Defense is doing right now, but that’s par for the course this week. I was wrong about so many games that it is no longer amusing. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get into the action and take my medicine.

An Open Letter to My Reformed Brothers and Sisters December 27, 2004

I have seen numerous examples of people abusing others in various forums due to their difference (or lack) of theological reasoning. Sadly, many of these people claim reformed doctrine as their own. Why is this? Have we discovered some truth that others just are unwilling to grasp? Have we found the true, exclusionary way to realize salvation? Are we now a step above other Christians? Has the realization that God chose us and set us apart in Him gone to our heads in such a way that we now have license to spiritually abuse those who haven’t come to similar conclusions? If you feel this is so, I have a message for you.
